WELCOME TO ALASKAN KLEE KAI KENNELETTE INFORMATION PAGES.
All my web sites are designed to hopefully give lots of information to those who are interested in this Miniature Husky Breed.
Visit the web site where you will find Questions and Answers and History, as well as Linda Spurlin's page where she describes how this breed came to be. http://www.alaskankleekai.com
Visit the web site where you will see many many pictures of all ages of Alaskan Klee Kai. http://www.alaskankleekai.net
A list of Alaskan Klee Kai Owners, who have agreed to communicate with those who are inquiring about our breed, can be found listed by State at http://www.alaskankleekai.org/ownerlist.HTM . Keep checking back to that page for updated information. Hopefully this will put you in contact with others so that you can get a variety of opinions about our breed and if you are lucky you might be invited to visit and meet some Alaskan Klee Kai in person.
I am continually asked where a breeder of the Alaskan Klee Kai can be found. Previously I had a Breeder Referral List that was a free service for other breeders as well as for people who were looking for them, but it became too much of a responsibility and too time consuming for me to keep it up to date since people often change their addresses and web sites. Now, the Alaskan Klee Kai Association of America, which has been the protector of this breed since its beginning, has a web site on which it lists breeders who are members of AKKAOA , so it is no longer necessary for me to supply that service. Please go to http://www.akkaoa.org to see that list. You can also find a list of breeders on http://www.uakka.com . These web sites are maintained by the two Alaskan Klee Kai Clubs that are recognized by the United Kennel Club. You can also call UKC at 269-343-9020 to get a list of breeders for your State. Keep in mind that these are not recommendation lists and are only referral lists to give you names to contact. The lists for AKKAOA and UAKKA are probably pretty much up to date for their memberships. Breeders pay to be listed on UKC Breeder Referral List and I am not aware of how often they update that list. Obviously, none of these lists are complete within themselves, so it is advisable for interested parties to check all locations for information.
IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION: Although the Alaskan Klee Kai breed has a reputation of being very healthy and sturdy, it was recently discovered that some dogs within our breed carries a mutated Gene, known as FACTOR VII DEFICIENCY. We are fortunate to have discovered the presence of this gene and to have had a DNA testing procedure developed quite rapidly, thus most responsible breeders are now in the process of having their dogs checked by DNA to determine which dogs are without that problem Gene, which dogs have the Gene and are only Carriers of the Gene, and not individually Affected by the Gene, but do have the ability to pass that Gene to others. And this test, most importantly, can identify which individual dogs are Affected by the Gene, meaning that they possibly can demonstrate a bleeding problem. At this time there are fewer than half a dozen Alaskan Klee Kai that are known to have demonstrated a bleeding problem, but we now know that dogs that are deemed to be "Affected" may not have the proper clotting time when there is a wound present. In my opinion it is important that we try to control this Gene NOW, by identifying each dog and its status, and then following intelligent breeding practices with the hopes of eliminating the Gene that could result in producing puppies that can become bleeders.
Click here for RESULTS OF TESTING FOR FACTOR VII DEFICIENCY AT ALASKAN KLEE KAI KENNELETTE, or enter http://www.alaskankleekai.org/FVII.htm in your web browser. A PUBLIC SITE has been opened for all Alaskan Klee Kai owners and breeders to enter information on their own individual dogs at http://www.adorableakk.com/AKKPublicInfo/Health/FactorVII/ Also, several breeders will be posting on their individual web sites.
My hope is that my web sites, and web sites of other responsible breeders and owners, will be a benefit to all who are interested in the breed and who happen to open these pages.
